Katy Tompkins

Katy has been at Compass Montessori since January of 2016, but began her Montessori career 2001 in Flagstaff AZ. As a Montessorian, she loves helping children navigate their world and shares her passion of peace education and environmentalism. She views every interaction as a learning experience for her students and herself. She loves sharing her knowledge with her co-workers and parents, as she strongly believes in life-long learning for everyone. The classroom is one of her favorite places to be. Observing children moving about the classroom with purpose and building their independence and self-efficacy is truly one of the best experiences to behold.

Her educational career began at the University of Northern Colorado where she was inspired to become a high school English teacher. Soon after graduation, she moved to Flagstaff, AZ and began substituting at a Montessori school. She was in awe of what the children were accomplishing in the classroom. The children were so independent, focused on working and able to vocalize their needs.  Shortly after that, she began helping with aftercare and then was an assistant in the Children’s House with a great mentor teacher. When the lead went on maternity leave, she stepped into her position and began Montessori training. Katy returned to the Front Range in 2006, where she continued working in a Montessori community as a lead and then as an Instructional Leader to enhance and help the practice of the teachers with whom she worked.

Katy loves spending time with her husband, Nick, and children, Paloma and Holden.  She also enjoys yoga, coffee, gardening and visiting bookstores and all things Montessori. The Montessori philosophy has had a profound impact on her life, and she is grateful to have found a passion that helps her positively influence the world.
