February 10th

We apologize for the lack of newsletters this semester! We have been busy getting back into the swing of things.

We have had a fun semester so far, including our ice skating field trip and the Chinese New Year celebration. The kids enjoyed both of these events. We learned a lot about the traditions of Chinese New Year by reading books, watching videos, and creating crafts. We were also lucky enough to have a special presentation by Erika Deru (mother of four Compass students). She spoke about her experience with the celebration and showed the children many beautiful artifacts and items from China. They were also able to sample some treats and were given a special souvenir!

We have several special days next week as well. On Monday, we have a last minute field trip to Buntport Theater. The children will see a play called "Siren Song: A Pirate Odyssey," which is a play based on Homer's "Odyssey." We will collect payment for this field trip at a later date. Please return the form on Monday morning so that they are able to ride the bus. On Thursday, we also have a field trip to see the Denver Ballet. The children will see a piece called "Ballet MasterWorks." It will feature three ballets works: "Firesong," "Serenade," and "Petite Mort." For this event, the children are invited to dress up. They also need to bring a sack lunch, as we eat during the intermission.

Valentine's Day is also next week, so we will have a small celebration in the classroom. We will make Valentines for one another, so your child should NOT bring Valentines for their classmates.

Please, please, please continue to read with your child on a daily basis. It is so important for them to gain fluency and confidence with their reading. If they have access to Lexia, please encourage regular practice with this as well. The children are working hard to develop their reading and comprehension, so reading at home will reinforce the skills they are gaining. Additionally, the children are working on their math facts on a regular basis, so extra help with this at home will also make a huge difference. Find fun ways to practice! There are many suggestions online, and there are apps too!

Third grade students will taking MAPS testing at the end of the month. They will take their reading test on February 23rd, language on February 24th, and math on February 27th. We are helping them to review for the test now, so please talk with them about doing their best but also reassuring them that they don't need to stress about it. We are just trying to see what they know!

Next Friday, February 17th, is an early release day. Carline will be at 11:15 and there is no aftercare.
