The Cypress room is looking forward to all the fun events we have coming up in October!
We have our field trip to Miller Farms on Friday, October 7th. If you haven't turned in your permission slip and payment, please send it in with your child on Monday. We have attached the permission slip to the email if you need to print one to bring in. Every child needs to bring 1 or 2 reusable grocery bags with their names on them. They also need to bring a water bottle and sack lunch. We will be in the sun, so please apply sunscreen at home. We also encourage the children to wear a hat. They will be walking throughout the farm to pick produce, so they need to wear close toed shoes as well.
We also have two special visitors coming in October. The first is an improv teacher from Buntport theater. He will be visiting our classroom 3 times this month to work with the children on interpretation skills, working together, and acting. The fee for these activities is $7.50. Please send this money in at your convenience. We also have the Bouldering Bus coming at the end of the month on October 27th. The Bouldering Bus teaches the children balance on a slack line and through rock climbing inside a bus. We will be sending home a permission slip closer to the date.
We also have conferences starting on Monday, October 3rd. If you haven't signed up for a meeting, please do so as soon as possible. We have set aside these days to meet with you all, so we hope that everyone can take advantage of these times, as it is hard for us to find additional time slots in our busy schedules. If none of the remaining times work for you, let us know, as we are more than happy to accommodate those who truly need it.
We also wanted to reach out to everyone about our new policy on mechanical pencils and other school supplies. These have become a major distraction in the classroom. Many of the children are playing with the pencils instead of using them for their work. Also, you all have already paid a supply fee, so we can use these funds to provide supplies for the children so you are not spending additional money. If your child wants to bring these supplies to school, please encourage them to use them at home instead.
For 2nd grade parents, your child will be taking the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) on October 10th, 11th, and 12th. The purpose of this test is to identify children as GT (Gifted and Talented). The test is entirely in pictures and assesses the children's logic skills. There are three sections: verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal. If you want to opt out your 2nd grade children, please print out the form attached to the email and return it to school before the test date. The attachment also has additional information about the test. If your child is going to take the test, please make sure they eat a healthy breakfast on these mornings and that they have had a good night's sleep.
We have updated the snack calendar for October, so please check the website to see if your child has a day this month.
Some of our children worked very hard on a math lesson called the Decanomial, and they wanted you all to see their hard work. This work is a follow up from our introduction to squaring and cubing and prepares them for more advanced work in squaring and square root.
As always, please reach out to us if you have any questions or concerns. We look forward to seeing you at conferences!
