January 27, 2017

To bring our studies of Asia to a close today we celebrated the Chinese New Year with a lower elelmentary Immersion Day. On immersion days students have the opportunity to learn about a specific aspect of a culture or area of study. Classes travel between the three lower elementary rooms during the morning work period, having a unique learning experience with each of the lower elementary teaching teams. Aspects of the Chinese New Year were shared and discussed with students, followed by three individual projects.

The Acacia Room presented the Chinese Zodiac, reading the story of how the animals were chosen for the zodiac and learning about the attibutes of some of the individual animals. Because 2017  is the year of the Rooster we decorated and made our own rooster masks. We also looked at the 12 signs of the zodiac and will be bringing home a calendar to identify family member's Chinese zodiac signs!

The Aspen Room retold the legend of the dragon Nian, and the traditions of wearing red and making loud noises to scare away the people-eating dragon, back to the mountains where he resides. The Cypress Room emphasized the importance of color and fire to frigthen Nian, making lanterns to brightly shine light, keeping Nian away. Children loved hearing the stories and creating their own crafts to commemorate the New Year.

The 2017 Chinese New Year officially begins tomorrow, Saturday, January 28 and runs through February 2. There will be many observances throughout the city; if you and your family are interested in seeing some live performances celebrating Chinese New Year this weekend or next, check out this link for the Colorado Asian Cultural and Heritage Center:    http://www.cachcdragonlion.org/events.html  They have wonderful dragon and lion dance troupes. Below is a list of some of their performances.
