Happy Friday!
It's been a busy week in our classroom with Watch Me Work, changing the materials to reflect even more Fall and October work, and Parent Teacher Conferences. We bit off "more of the apple" than we could chew! This week was made possible by the generosity of families with apple trees in their yard and we couldn't have planned it or been more grateful that it turned out that way! They have been scrubbing apples, using apples in their artwork, comparing apples, looking for similarities and differences in all the apples, graphing apples, identifying the parts of apples, looking for apple seeds (and other seeds too), and even using apples for science! Thank you so much to all the families that shared their apples with us!
The children were thrilled to host you for Watch Me Work and we certainly hope you felt as proud of their work as we did! They did such a wonderful job preparing for you and demonstrated some of the Grace and Courtesy they have learned, as well as some of their great accomplishments. Thanks for making the time to join us!
We have truly enjoyed meeting with you for Parent Teacher Conferences and look forward to seeing the rest of you at your upcoming conference time!
Have a wonderful weekend,
The lessons this week were:
Lifecycle of an Apple (Science)
Apple Tasting (Sensorial) and Parts of an Apple (Science)
Apple Graphing (Math)
Parts of a Leaf (Science)
The Volcano Apple Experiment to revisit the 3 States of Matter (Science)
Next week's Sound of the Week is "f" as in fangs, fish, football, festival, and funky,
Is your child starting to sound out words they see in the environment around them? Are they trying to read the words in the books you read to them? If so, this is a great article for you:
Thanks to Huxley for being our Greeter this week! Thanks to Nell Mangan, Huxley Schware, Alice Finster, Mara Hammer, and Juniper Lanier for the apples and small pumpkins! Thanks to Cristianna Ruple for helping with P.E. this week and for washing our laundry! Thanks to Sue Hammer, Mara's grandmother, for being our Mystery Reader! Thanks to Sara Grizzaffi for completing our nesting boxes for the geography shelf! And thanks so much for the delicious snacks you've provided to keep us going through Parent Teacher Conferences! Thanks to our wonderful Room Parents for organizing that too!

Happy Friday!
It sure looks like Fall in the Mountain Room! The children truly enjoyed finding the new work on the shelves as they went about their week. And, we named some of the tell-tale signs of the changes of season...how the sun seems to be slower to rise, evenings seem to arrive a little earlier, the mornings are cool and the evenings can be chilly but understanding that the earth continues to tilt away from the sun is a little harder to wrap your brain around because it doesn't feel like the earth is moving under us! This is a great time of year for after-dinner walks. Find a memorable landmark along your path and note how the sun seems to move. Remind them that it's not the sun that's moving, it's our spot on the earth that is! If you want to take it a step further, go outside one night while the sun is still up and use some painter's tape to mark the shadow of something and make a point of checking on your mark once a week.
Sadly, during our Staff Inservice Day last Friday, we were told that we could no longer have our African Dwarf Frogs in our classsroom. It is considered a Health and Safety violation for this age group. Bah humbug!! But we turned the bad news into something good, and had our first official class vote. After the lost snake debacle, Ms Licorice had to find a new home which meant the Aspen room children were really sad. When we narrowed the solutions to our frog problem down to just 2 (and there were so many!), the children unanimously voted to gift our frogs to the Aspen Room. And they have paid us back in kindness! Each morning, the Aspen Room children place the frogs out on the table in the hallway so the children can stop by for a visit as they make their way back to our classroom. It seems like the frogs are happier too because they are much more active in that new spot so they are so much more fun to see!
Our lessons this week were:
The 3 States of Matter/ Sorting by Solids, Liquids or Gases (Science)
Folding Clothing (Practical Life)
Story Sequencing (Language)
Introduction to 3D Shapes with the Geometric Solids (Sensorial)
Fingerprint Trees (Art)
Next week's Sound of the Week is "e" as in egg, elephant, ellipse, everyone, even numbers, exit, enter, Elmo, energy, and elk.
Thanks to Jocelyn Wood for being our Greeter this week! Thanks to Morgan Adeyote and Krista Estep for listening to children read this week! Thanks to Noel Meuller for being our Mystery Reader this week! Thanks to Stephanie Magee for stuffing Friday folders! Thanks to Jennifer Wood for doing our laundry again this week!
Thank you all for the beautiful bouquet and gift cards for my birthday! I let the children guess my age and it took about 12 guesses before they got it right! It was a wonderful way to start my birthday weekend and I really enjoyed being able to celebrate with them!
We have a couple of requests if you have time and may be interested in any of these opportunities to fulfill your volunteer hours:
*We'd love a small (think grapefruit-sized) pumpkin for scrubbing.
*If you have an apple tree in your yard and could send some apples in for scrubbing, that would be divine!
*If you can sew a small hook back onto our dishcloth, that's an easy job and does not require a sewing machine.
*if you can find some darker fabric and sew the edges of a rectangle with the dimensions: 36" X 26", we'd love to be able to cover our back door's window during nap.
Watch Me Work is on Tuesday and the children are really excited to show you what they've been working on!
We have a few guidelines to ensure the success of your child's time in the classroom:
- Please arrive for your scheduled spot
- Place your belongings inside your child's cubby
- Grab the list that will be taped to their cubby and use this to guide your child's work choices. We have chosen work to help them show you what they have been working on in different areas of the classroom. There will be a work they are very close to mastering, a work that will demonstrate an area that you can help with and one that they have chosen to show you for fun. Please stick to your list! This helps ensure that they can demonstrate their independence, new knowledge and success within the classroom. If your child has a work on their list that is in use, please come ask for another similar work rather than substitute one.
- When you hear the music, it means it's time for the next group of families, so please wrap up and make your way out of the classroom to make room for the next group.
Thanks for your help in supporting them and we can't wait to see you!

Happy Friday!
We ended our week with a truly wonderful Peace Day Celebration. Children's House was the first to open the celebration with our songs and they watched intently as each of the levels added their contributions to the day they started. It was one of those moments that make me truly grateful to be a part of this community! Though we had lots of practices, once we were outside in the sunshine, on the "big playground", surrounded by each of the other levels in a sea of white, they seemed to recognize their importance as peacemakers in this world. It was as if, in that time, they suddenly understood that they were respected members of this community and that their contributions were just as significant as the older children they look up to in the hallways. They carried that confidence with them for the rest of the day!
We also began talking about the impending change in season so when the weather changes this weekend, ask what they think might be happening.
We also began to change some of the materials on the shelves and it has been super fun to watch them as they discover the new opportunities available to them! When they return on Monday, they'll find signs of fall along with other new work in each of the areas of the classroom. We hope they'll share some of their favorites with you!
Our lessons this week were:
Germs and Making a Booger Ghost (proper nose-blowing steps) - Practical Life
Scientific Observation - Science
Stereognostic Sorting - Sensorial
Watercolor Lines - Art
Ms Lis' Social Emotional Lesson was all about peace as she introduced "peaceful spot".
Thanks to Katie and Henry Wyman for refreshing our library books! Thanks to Westin for being our Greeter this week! Thanks to Jessica Gay for helping with P.E.! Thanks to Annika Hills, Jeremiah's aunt, for listening to our readers this week! Thanks to Krista Estep for being our Mystery Reader this week! Thanks to Jennifer Wood for washing our laundry this week! And thanks to our Room Parents, Lindsay Fitzpatrick, Leanna De La Torre and Morgan Adeyote, for already working on our Wacky Hat Day party! Thanks for communicating with us about your child's absences, late arrivals and early pick ups! Though you fill out the absence and tardy forms online, admin receives those and we do not get that information so it's very helpful to receive your emails to keep us in the loop!

Happy Friday!
Have a wonderful weekend,
This week's focus has been trying to understand the broad concept of peace. When we began trying to define it, the children were anxious to describe what it is not. They weren't far off because if you look up the definition, here's what you might find: a stress-free state of security and calmness, a state of tranquility or quiet, freedom from disturbance or war. However, trying to define what it is seemed much more difficult. They said it means not fighting, or kicking, hitting other people but we went back to the lessons of last week and discussed what it feels like inside your body when you're silent, breathing and calm. They said you can hear other things around you better; and it feels like you're waiting for chances to help others. Once we got there, which, in my opinion, was a brilliant way to describe peace, we started to look for ways to share our peace with others. Keep in mind, that's not so easy when you're just 3 or 4 or 5 years old but they didn't let that stop them! We started making a list of ways to share peace and it's getting lengthy but they're not ready to stop. As we prepare for the peace celebration next Thursday, we're hoping you'll see some evidence of some of those ideas! Maria Montessori's quote below seems to describe it as the children do:
“Peace is not an absence of war, it is a virtue, a state of mind, a disposition for benevolence, confidence, and justice.”
With all that in mind, we are in good hands because:
The lessons this week were:
Peacemaker Responsibilities
2 Dimensional and 3 Dimensional Shape Sorting
Patterning
The Peace Process for Conflict Resolution (here's a video if you want to use this process at home: The Peace Rose )
Parts of a Tree
Ms Lis' Social Emotional Lesson was an introduction to the series "Inspire to Create a Better You! by Diane Alber. This week they learned about "Scribble Spot" who is a little mix of all our feelings. As the lessons continue, they will learn to identify each of the emotions or feelings that they might feel.
Next week's Sound of the Week is "c" as in cat, carrot, cup, candle, cookie, and corn. "C" can also make a "ssss" sound as in cent, celery and cinnamon. Try to steer them away from the "ssss" words and suggest something that begins with a hard c sound. (We'll get to the soft c sound as each child is ready to learn that rule independently.)
Thanks to Claire De La Torre for being our Greeter this week! Thanks to Krista Estep and Katie Boyless for listening to children read this week! Thanks to Morgan Adeyote for helping with P.E. this week! Thanks to Janet Hopkins for being our Mystery Reader! Thanks to Cristianna Ruple for washing our laundry this week! Thanks to Stephanie Magee for stuffing Friday folders!
As promised, here is the link to sign up for "Watch Me Work" in the Mountain Room on October 1st: Fall "Watch Me Work" in the Mountain Room
We hope you'll make time to attend this event. Watch Me Work is held twice a year and gives parents and guardians a chance to see their child working in her/his classroom. You are encouraged to watch your child work while you quietly observe the process. We will be present to provide you with informal feedback about how your child is benefiting from their work and/or the purpose of the work. This unique experience is a great time to ask questions to help support their growth as well as to notice any hurdles we are working to overcome. Some children will want to demonstrate working with many different materials and some will have one favorite picked out to share. Some will talk through their work and some will choose to work silently saving the conversation for the end. Follow your child’s lead and give them the opportunity to be the teacher in this setting. It's truly a wonderful opportunity to see what your child is working on and to also see what other students of different ages are learning. You'll see what may be ahead for your child and see how different children execute their skills with their own individual style. We look forward to seeing all of you there!
After "Watch Me Work", Parent-Teacher Conferences will begin. Here is the sign-up for to choose your time slot:

Happy Friday and happy September!
"A child has a twofold of sense of order. One of these is external and pertains to his perception of his/her relation with his/her environment. The second is internal and makes him/her aware of the different parts of his/her own body and their relative positions." -Dr. Montessori, The Secret of Childhood
It has been a wonderful week in our classroom! I know that my newsletters report the lessons we share each week; however, the true aims of a Montessori 3-6 classroom are: Independence, Order, Concentration and Coordination. The children are learning to trust that they have all that they need within the classroom and they are becoming more comfortable in our environment which supports their growing sense of Independence. They are internalizing the routines which are important for their developing sense of Order and they are asking for lessons and helping one another. This is a direct reflection of their developing self-confidence in their growing skills and the Coordination that's developing so they can be successful in the endeavors they choose. Then there are the quieter moments, when it feels as if we could leave the classroom and our absence would go unnoticed. This happens as a result of their growing skills of Concentration and the natural desire to perfect themselves! If i've piqued your interest, here's a very brief explanation:The Aims of a Montessori 3-6 Classroom
Want to continue all this great work at home? Here are some ideas to keep the learning going:
The lessons this week were:
Transfer with a Sponge (Practical Life)
The Breathing Ball (Peace)
Rhyming (Language)
Self Portraits (Art)
Ms Lis joined us this week for a Social Emotional lesson. She talked about 2 topics: It's OK to be different, and then she introduced the concept of "neurodivergence" with the book titled "Neurodivergent Ninja". Understanding yourself is the first part of becoming a peacemaker. For more helpful tidbits on this topic, here is an article to help: Social Emotional Learning for young children And here are some books to support your discussions: Books about Kindness
We had our first birthday celebration of the year last week...Happy 5th birthday Aliza! It was a treat to celebrate it all together and a wonderful way to show the younger children just how we celebrate each other and mark the important date!
Next week's Sound of the Week is "b" as in ball, bagel, biscuit, bed, bug and box.
In this week's Friday folder, you will find a catalogue titled FROM SMALL HANDS. This is a great place to find kid-friendly tools for helping in the kitchen, or with chores, or more specific items that support their growing fine motor skills, or something that speaks to their particular interests. If you place an order in the next few weeks, you'll have them for the holidays. We also love that they give Compass a percentage of your purchase so we can replace the snow shovels, lost silverware, rakes and other items that need to be replaced or repaired.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Thanks to Alice Finster for being our Greeter this week! Thanks to Nate Boyless for helping with P.E. the last 2 weeks! Thanks to Katy Sweeney for listening to children read this week! Cheerleader, Reading Buddies or Mystery Reader. If you can't do one of those, there are other opportunities to do some work at home under the Volunteer Opportunities tab on our webpage.
*If you have already signed up to volunteer or plan to ask a grandparent, neighbor, or extended family member planning to volunteer, please send the links to them to complete before they arrive to volunteer. This applies to anyone who wants to volunteer, chaperone, read, etc. at Compass. The following two steps need to be completed:

Happy Friday!
The children are settling in and beginning to discover their independence within the classroom and build confidence in their growing skills! We've even had a few children master their first sounds which is such a victory! We began to define each of the areas of the classroom so the children can determine what area they are working in and where to return the materials they are using. I have put each area in parenthesis after the lessons below so you can ask them questions about their favorite work and see if they can tell you where it comes from.
Specials started this week so we had our first P.E. and Music classes. The children are working to follow directions and be in control of their bodies for larger and smaller movements and also to be still which is the most challenging so far. In music, Mr Zach has been introducing a song with various instruments and they are working to listen and use the beat to follow along.
We introduced the set of books by Jory John and Pete Oswald to help understand social cues and communicate our needs appropriately. (jory-john-books ) We've been reading them together this week so you may hear them talking about the good egg, the bad seed, the sour grape or cool bean. Each tells a story by defining a behavior and working to do what's needed to be kind and thoughtful in our interactions with others, and to manage our feelings so we can get to a place of calm and listen to what our body needs. It is very common (and developmentally appropriate) to recognize the behaviors of others before they are able to recognize those same in themselves. If you know the stories, you can behave like one of the characters and ask your child who you are acting like! It's a great conversation starter to continue working on their growing social skills!
Our lessons this week were:
Felt Rolling and Folding Cloths (Practical Life)
Shell Scrubbing (Practical Life)
Syllabication/Clapping words by their syllables (Language)
(This video helps explain the skill if you want to keep practicing at home: Syllable Stomp
Making Silence-this is the first lesson in our peace curriculum (Peace)
Cutting Strips (Art)
We had our first Fire Drill today so we practiced walking to our safe place and staying in a line to stay safe when we are exiting the building for an emergency.
The children did a great job and the Inventors stepped up to help with the Explorers.
Next week's Sound of the Week is "a" as in alligator, apple, acrobat, axle, and antelope. If you are interested in supporting your child's growing skills, this is a great infographic to help understand phonological awareness: phonological-awareness
In Jeffco, we use the Science of Reading Approach to teach reading in addition to our relying on our Montessori philosophy and training which is very phonologically based. If I've sparked your interest in the process, here is a condensed explanation of The Science Of Reading: science of reading-basics
Hot Lunch began this week and the children have seemed to enjoy their choices so far. If they are not loving Hot Lunch, we have tried to communicate with you but if you still have questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
Thanks to all of the families who have helped in our coin quest! Thanks to Dottie Hopkins for being our Greeter this week! Thanks to Noel Mueller and Krista Estep for listening to children read this week! I can only think that Noel enjoyed his time with us so much that he ran home and asked his mom to come on Thursday to be a Reading Budding too! I may be a little biased, but listening to children work on their growing reading skills is truly a bucket-filler! Do you know anyone that might need their bucket filled? Thanks to Christianna Ruple for washing our laundry this week and thanks to Jennifer Wood for washing it last week! Thanks to Janet Hopkins for refreshing our library books last week too!

*When packing a lunch, please leave the sweet treats at home or you can have them with you when you pick your child up to eat when they're headed home. I'm asking because, when your child opens their lunchbox, the sweet treat or dessert is the first thing they want to eat and often, like if they just had a snack before our lunchtime, that's all they want to eat. As a rule, candy is not allowed in lunchboxes but the other sweet treats are very distracting too.
