Destination Imagination participants become lifelong problem solvers who are inspired to innovate creative solutions to real-world challenges quickly and collaboratively. This entirely learner-focused experience empowers students to take the lead and provides a framework within which they can take risks and learn from failure. DI provides unique educational experiences across seven project-based challenge types: technical, scientific, engineering, fine arts, improvisational, service learning, and early learning.

Challenge Experience: Problem solving, team building, and a respect for others and their ideas are the foundation of all of our challenges. Students develop confidence and resilience while discovering their unique talents and abilities. Solutions belong 100% to the team members; no interference, suggestions, or ideas can be accepted from outside of the team itself. Their efforts in engineering, construction, writing, and acting culminates in an 8-minute dramatic performance at a live tournament.

Teams of up to seven students are grouped by level: non-competitive early learners (K-2), elementary (3-5), middle (6-8), senior (9-12), and university.

About Compass DI:

Since 2008, Compass Destination Imagination teams have earned numerous top-three finishes at Regional and State levels, top-ten finishes at Global Finals, and merit-based special awards at all levels for creativity and innovation. In 2022 and 2023, a University team of former Compass students won at Global Finals and received Renaissance Awards for exceptional skill in engineering and design. Also in 2023, our Senior Level (SL) Improv team and SL Engineering team each won first place at the CO Affiliate Tournament and went to Global Finals. The SL and Middle Level Engineering teams also won Da Vinci Awards.

Compass Destination Imagination 2023

We have a pressing need for more Compass team managers so that ALL our interested students can participate! Managers are provided with extensive resources, including mentoring, online and in-person training, roadmaps, and access to materials. To be a successful DI manager, you need about 2.5-3 hours per week, some time-management/organizational skills, patience in the face of chaos, and the ability to let the team make independent decisions and act upon them. No other skills required!

The DI season begins in September or October (early learners begin in January) with the JeffCo Regional Tournament in Feb/Mar. Top three finishers at Regionals qualifies competitive teams to compete at State, and a top-four State finish enables them to participate at Global Finals. Rising Stars! participate in the Starry Showcase at the JeffCo Tournament.

Meetings: Teams meet weekly (starting date, day, and time are based on availability of team managers), with the potential of additional meetings closer to the tournament days. Meetings may be at school or off-site depending on individual team needs.

Cost: $125 for Early Learners - includes team manager background checks, Challenge materials and supplies, Regional Tournament fee, and a Regional DI t-shirt.

$250 for Competitive participants - includes the above plus State Tournament fees and a CO State t-shirt or pins. Some financial assistance may be available. Compass DI is run completely by volunteers.

Please fill out the DI INTEREST form for each child. If you'd like to learn more about managing a team, indicate that on the form. You will be notified about team placement and meeting information once we have enough managers, or by mid-September.

*** 2023 Jeffco Tournament RESULTS***

Compass Montessori brought seven teams to the JeffCo Tournament, one non-competitive team of 1st-2nd grade Rising Stars!, and six competitive teams from Elementary through High School. EVERY competitive Compass team placed in the top three in their Challenge and advanced to the State Tournament!

Elementary (3rd-5th WR), Scientific Challenge: 2nd
Elementary (4th-5th WR), Engineering Challenge: 3rd
Elementary (4th-5th Golden), Fine Arts Challenge: 2nd
Middle (6th WR), Engineering Challenge: 1st
Senior (8th-11th, FS/HS), Engineering Challenge: 1st
Senior (11th, HS), Improv Challenge: 1st

Challenge Explanations:

Improv: Teams had to research 10 experts such as Jane Goodall, Socrates, and Hayao Miyazaki and research 10 competitions such as Thumb Wars, Floral Design, and Heavy Metal Knitting. At the competition, they were given two additional things to incorporate into their skit: an underdog, and a complication.
Our SL were given Antoni Gaudí, Trivia Night, and a frustrated marathoner.

Engineering: Teams had to research and build a roller coaster, with restrictions on the types of materials they could use. They had to assemble the roller coaster during the presentation, and include a theatrical effect, a thrilling event, and integrate the roller coaster tests into their performance.

Fine Arts: Teams had to retell a well-known tale from the perspective of a new main character. They had to incorporate a scenery flip where part or all of their backdrop rotates; a focus shift where the audience's attention is shifted to a new location; and a literary device.

Scientific: Teams researched Tall Tales and developed a character with an extreme, drastic, exaggerated trait. They incorporated research about the trait and whether it could be true, and included a theatrical embellishment that used technical methods to enhance the trait.

Rising Stars!: Teams developed a story about going on an adventure. They were required to have costumes and make and play their own musical instruments to enhance their story. They also had to perform an original song.

Da Vinci Award for Outstanding Creativity: The paths we follow on our journeys were once uncharted and unknown – until someone took a bold step in a new direction and paved a way for us to follow. To solve our Challenges, imagination, creativity, originality and courage are required. We honor those individuals and teams who most clearly demonstrate that spirit of adventurous risk in their solutions – those who most creatively traveled to reach truly new and unique destinations. The Da Vinci Award is named to honor one of humanity’s greatest creative thinkers, Leonardo Da Vinci.
